Introduction to Functional Analysis in Psychotherapy

This course provides a practical, accessible, engaging overview of clinical functional analysis, the core assessment method of behavior therapy.  Functional analysis is THE basic tool for assessing and understanding any client problem as well as the relationships between a client's problems, their habits and other behaviors, and their world.  The course walks you through the basic concepts of functional analysis, illustrating each concept with clinical examples and gradually progressing to more complex clinical applications.  The course closes with an extended interactive learning exercise in which you apply your understanding of functional analysis to a realistic clinical case.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course participants will be able to:

  • Define target behavior, consequences, and antecedents
  • Apply these concepts to sketch functional analysis of clinically relevant behavior
  • Use functional analysis to make sense out of complex client problems
