The primary purpose of this webinar is to provide a practical guide to the meaning and applicability of the APA's Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct to the professional practice of psychology. The webinar will put into practical perspective the rationale behind and application of ethical standards to the broad spectrum of professional roles and activities of psychologists using clear examples of behaviors that would be in compliance with or in violation of enforceable standards.  Using case examples the workshop is intended to assist psychologists in effectively using the Ethics Code to address new ethical challenges that continue to emerge in the rapidly changing new technologies, evidence-based practice competencies, cultural landscape, and health care law.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course participants will be able to:

  • Develop informed consent and confidentiality policies for clinical work involving children, adolescents, and adults with serious mental disorders.
  • Identify and successfully navigate ethical issues in the use of social media, mobile health and web-based technologies in treatment, assessment, billing and record keeping.
  • Apply APA specialty guidelines for clinical practice involving diverse cultural and religious groups, LGBTQ clients, women and girls, child custody evaluations.


Celia B. Fisher, Ph.D., Marie Ward Doty University Endowed Chair, Professor of Psychology and founding Director of the Fordham University Center for Ethics Education served as Chair of the American Psychological Association's (APA) Ethics Code Task Force responsible for the last comprehensive revision of the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and is the author of Decoding the Ethics Code: A Practical Guide for Psychologists now in its 3rd edition.  She has served as Chair of the New York State Board for Psychology, the Environmental Protection Agency's Human Studies Review Board, the HHS Secretary's Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections Subcommittee on Children's Research and as a member of the APA Ethics Committee, NIMH Data Safety and Monitoring Board, the Institute of Medicine Committee on Clinical Research Involving Children the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council Task Force on The Revision to the Common Rule for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences.  She is the recipient of the 2010 Health Improvement Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Human Research Protection and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  She is the author of over 150 theoretical and empirical articles and co-editor of 8 books in the areas of ethics and human development. She has had continuous NIH funding for research programs focusing on ethical issues and psychosocial wellbeing of vulnerable populations and for her directorship of the Fordham University HIV and Drug Abuse Prevention Research Ethics Training Institute.
