In this ABCT webinar, Dr. Zindel Segal, Ph.D. discusses Mindful Medication in Clinical Practice. Mindfulness is the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally to things as they are. Recent empirical reviews support the efficacy of mindfulness training in reducing depressive and anxious symptoms, largely through targeting rumination, worry and other forms of elaborative emotional regulation. The heart of this work lies in acquainting clients with the modes of mind that often characterize emotional disorders while simultaneously inviting them to develop a new relationship to these modes. Integrating experiential exercises and formal presentation, this webinar will provide an overview of the research and clinical rationales for introducing mindfulness meditation into your clinical work. The webinar focuses on ways to enhance client access to three elements that all mindfulness practices share in common; awareness, present moment and acceptance, the role of the therapist's own practice of mindfulness as determining competence in this approach and deciding between offering a structured mindfulness group intervention or simply sprinkling specific mindfulness practices into your ongoing individual therapy work with clients.

Zindel Segal, Ph.D, is Distinguished Professor of Psychology in Mood Disorders at the University of Toronto - Scarborough and a Senior Scientist in the Campbell Family Research Institute at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Dr. Segal has studied and published widely on psychological treatments for depression for more than 30 years, especially the nature of psychological prophylaxis for this recurrent and disabling disorder. His early work helped to characterize psychological markers of relapse vulnerability in affective disorder, especially the link between affective and self-devaluation components of dysphoria and provided the empirical rationale for offering training mindfulness mediation to recurrently depressed patients in recovery. An author of over 10 books and 130 scientific papers, Dr. Segal's latest publication The Mindful Way Workbook is a patient guide for achieving mood balance in everyday life.
